Announcing the 2010 Helias Hall of Fame presented for outstanding achievement and service to Helias High School.

 

Sister Kathleen Wegman, SSND

Sister Kathleen Wegman, SSND, was born in Jefferson City, the daughter of LeRoy and Dorothy Wegman. She attended Helias High School and graduated in 1967. She received a B. A. from Notre Dame College in St. Louis in 1971 with a major in social studies and a minor in theology. She received an M.A. in elementary school administration from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa in 1980 and earned 12 hours toward a master's degree in pastoral studies from Loyola University in Chicago. She currently is working on a graduate certificate in canon law. She is a member of St. Joseph's Cathedral where she is a lector and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

Sister Kathleen was a very involved student at Helias. She was a class officer and member of the student council, and she participated in prom committee, play crew, Pepettes and intramurals. She was vice president and president of C.S.M.C , was a school reporter and was on the homecoming court her senior year. Sister Kathleen began her vocation as a teacher at Sacred Heart School in Illinois and served as teacher, principal, provincial leader and director of elementary schools in such places as Illinois, New Mexico, Missouri, Japan and Nepal. She currently is Chancellor of the Diocese of Jefferson City. She assists Helias High School Board with goal setting and helped facilitate the long range planning process for Helias.

A tireless community volunteer and motivator wherever she serves, Sister Kathleen assisted in establishing an inter-congregational retirement facility in St. Louis, served on a committee to establish Sister Thea Bowman School in East St. Louis, was chairperson of Area Elementary Principals in Belleville, Illinois, served on the Human Relations Committee for Decatur, Illinois and as commissions for two years and currently is a member of the Mission Effectiveness Council of St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City.

Sister Kathleen has lived and worked in various cultures in the United States and many parts of the world including Honduras, Guatemala, Peru, Japan, Nepal , Sierra Leone and Rome. She co-facilitated the regional chapter of the Good Samaritan Sisters in Kobe, Japan, and she participated in two general chapters of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Rome. She has given many presentations on topics related to spiritual development of the person and faith growth of communities in many areas of the world. A well-deserved honor was bestowed on Sister Kathleen in 1992 when she received the National Catholic Education Association Distinguished Graduate Award.
